Where Do Flies Go at Night

As the day begins to wind down, flies start to find suitable places to spend their nights.  According to Dr. Grimaldi, bees tend to find shelter under the leaves and branches, on the stems of plants, and the twigs and trunks of trees.

Flies have a good grip. They can sleep upside down hanging with the branches of the trees. Flies sleep in warm and safe places.

The question arises, how many types of flies are present in this world? Well, the simple answer to this question is ‘too many. There are almost 120,000 different types of flies present globally. We shall be discussing the most common type of flies i.e. houseflies.

Resting and sleeping are very important for the proper functioning of any organism. They increase the efficiency of that organism.

Do flies sleep?

Yes! Flies sleep at night time. Flies are diurnal insects and follow the light/ dark cycle. So, flies go to sleep at night even if they are always kept in darkness. Flies find their way to branches and twigs of the trees to spend the night.

Flies have a Central Nervous System. For the proper functioning of the central nervous system, sleeping is crucial. Scientists have proven that like humans, flies also alternate between the light and deep sleep stages throughout the night time.

Baby flies, just like baby humans, sleep most of the time throughout the day. Adult Flies tend to sleep more in slightly warmer environments.

How long do flies live?

flies have an average lifespan of 28 days. Yes! You have read this right. Flies get to live a very short life with a minimum of 15 days and a maximum of 30 days. The life expectancy of flies depends upon the surrounding environment and temperature.

The Life Cycle of a housefly comprises four definite stages: 1st is the egg, followed by the 2nd stage which is a larva, 3rd stage is the development of the pupa and finally, 4th stage is the adult fly. Houseflies that develop in warmer environments undergo a fuck development and tend to live longer lives as compared to the other flies.

Where do flies go at night?

After spending the entire day on the grounds and flying here and there, flies seek refuge under the leaves, on the twigs, branches, and on the bark of trees to spend their night. Flies do not spend their nights on the ground.

The sleeping pattern of flies can be affected by some chemicals and drugs just like humans. Cocaine and caffeine keep the flies awake for longer periods. Alcohol and antihistamines can make the flies feel drowsy.

Proper sleep is required for the efficient performance of the organisms. Therefore, flies tend to sleep in the morning if their sleep is disturbed during the daytime.

How long do flies sleep?

Beauty sleep is always associated with females but it is not always true. Studies have proved that female flies’ sleeping time is less than that of male flies.

Female flies sleep for about 400 to 800 minutes per day while male house flies sleep for around 800 to 1100 minutes per day.

Flies are cold-blooded organisms. It means that the body temperature of these insects changes with the surrounding environments. Warmer environments are ideal for the flies to grow and thrive.in extremely cold environments, flies become dormant or can even die.

So the flies look for food in the morning and go to sleep at night time after sunset when the temperature starts to drop.

Do flies sleep in the dark?

Houseflies have extremely sensitive eyes and antennae that enable them to view in the dark. Flies are diurnal insects, they do take some rest during the day as well. It is not necessary to be dark for the flies to go to sleep.

Flies follow a fixed pattern of sleep/ wake cycle. Therefore, flies can go to sleep at their fixed time even if they are kept in constant light or darkness.

Flies seek refuge under the leaves and on the twigs and branches of the trees to spend their nights. So, we can get relief from flies at night. There are some ways to keep the flies away from your house.

  • Prepare a mixture of half-glass vinegar and a few drops of dish soap in a glass. Cover the glass with plastic wrap securing it with rubber bands. Create small holes in the plastic lid of the glass.

Flies do feel pain. They react to pain in a much similar way as humans would. Flies feel pain in the form of ‘nociception’. There are some sensory receptors present in the body of the flies which enable them to detect pain, extreme heat, and cold.
